Casa Fluvià is an 18th century stone village house in the Alt Emporda close to several of the best beaches on the Costa Brava. Its 4 large bedrooms (3 doubles and 1 twin) accommodate up to 8 guests in great comfort. In addition, the house has a large kitchen/dining space with a big table, a living room, and two bathrooms. It has been recently renovated.
At the same time, the house retains dramatic period features, such as exposed beams, stone columns, arches, and vaulted ceilings. At roof level it has a charming sun room with views of rural surroundings and the Pyrenees, some 30 km away, and a terrace for enjoying sunny days and warm evenings.
The house is in Torroella de Fluvià, a typical agricultural village just 5 km from the Costa Brava, a friendly and convenient location in which to enjoy village life and pleasant walks in the surrounding fields and countryside. An exceptional local village shop just 50 meters away sells fresh bread from a nearby bakery, local produce, organic products produced in the village and a variety of local specialties well worth discovering. Nearby Sant Pere Pescador, set on the river mouth of the Fluvia, has many excellent local shops, bars and restaurants, a weekly market and a supermarket.
There is a conveniently located bar/restaurant in the centre of village and many restaurants to discover in nearby villages, with offerings ranging from simple regional fare to the most sophisticated gastronomy.
Nearby attractions
Torroella de Fluvià, which takes its name from the nearby river Fluvià, is close to some the most attractive and least crowded beaches of the Costa Brava. A favourite is Sant Martí de Empuries, with five small coves and a Greek breakwater. The maritime walkway affords a good view of the Roman ruins of Empúries and extends as far as the fishing town of L’Escala. The beaches at Sant Marti are ideal for sunbathing, swimming and diving, with direct access to the maritime walkway, shaded picnic areas and the cafes and restaurants of Sant Martí. The village also overlooks the impressive eight-kilometer sweep of Sant Pere Pescador beach, a favourite haunt of wind surfers, kite surfers and sun bathers.
If you prefer to search out a secluded cove, there are several nearby protected natural areas along the coastline, free from the pressure of mass tourism. One such area is the Muntanya Gran de Montgri just south of l'Escala and another is the Cap de Creus Natural Park, the easternmost part of continental Spain, where the Pyrenees run down to the sea. The road to Cap de Creus runs through the popular coastal village of Cadaqués and passes Salvador Dalí's residence at Port Lligat.
Closer by is the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park, a large nature reserve and bird sanctuary. An attractive place to visit all year round, the park is home to an impressive colony of storks and dramatic flamingos. It is a favorite of family groups as well as serious birdwathchers and is visited by a long list of birds, including hoopoes, buntings, lapwings, finches, and water birds such as ducks, geese, grebes, herons, divers, teal, spoonbills ...
If art is your interest, you will be pleased to find yourself in the midst of the Dalí triangle formed by the Dalí museum, just 15 minutes away in Figueres, the Dalí house in Port Lligat, and Gala's castle in Púbol. A worthwhile trip to the Museum of Modern Art in Céret, can be combined with a day's outing to France since the border is just 25 minutes from our house. Explore the French side of the Pyrenees, visit the vineyards of the Roussillon, or take the coast road, have lunch in Banyuls, and visit the dramatic sea port of Collioure. Another worthwhile stop is a visit the cloistered monastery of Saint Génis des Fontaines.
At any time of year there is plenty to do in this rural area dotted with medieval villages: markets to visit, local festivals, Roman ruins, churches and monasteries to see, great walks, bird sanctuary, sporting activities of all kinds. The whole area has mapped cycle routes and walking routes.
If you feel like some city life, Girona and Figueres are just 20 mins away or you can even take a train to Barcelona for the day.
Family
If you are looking for activities for the children after a day on the beach, go-karting in nearby L'Escala and the water park in Roses are good options, while Vilacolum just 2 km away has a Family Fun Park with mini-golf, a swimming pool, and a bouncy castle and other activities while the adults can keep watch from the terrace of a bar or cafe.
Walking, Cycling, Bird Watching, Archeology
The list of outdoor activities is too long to summarize here, but this lovely area of Girona Province is a great place for anyone interested in hiking (great coastal walks and hill walking upriver on the Fluvia not to mention the Alberes and Salines ranges), bird watching (nearby bird sanctuary and nature reserve), cycling (on and off road), or visiting the the archaeological sites at Empuries and Ullastret. Romanesque architecture.
Sports and leisure
The area is a great place for adventure sports of all kinds. Check out the web site of the local town of Sant Pere Pescador for just some of the great activities available: windsurfing, diving, kiteboarding, sea kayaking …
