This light and airy, recently refurbished, beautifully furnished house is situated in the historic heart of Almunecars old town close to all amenities. The old town has a vibrancy and flavour not found in modern developments. This is the real Spain - the local bar has live flamenco several evenings a week and most bars offer free delicious tapas. The house sleeps six comfortably. From the large south facing sun-bathing roof terrace there are views over the old town to the ocean, castle and mountains. There is also an outdoor shower on the terrace. There is a modern, fully equipped kitchen with black marble worktops on the ground floor and also an ‘al-fresco’ kitchen on the roof terrace comprising sink, washing machine and grill platter. The modern, fully tiled bathroom has sink, toilet, and bathtub with shower over.
Just around the corner is a small shop selling fresh bread and local produce. There is also a large daily food market in town selling fresh local fruit, fish, vegetables and flowers. On Fridays there is a large colourful street market selling clothes, pottery, leather goods, etc and on Sundays there is a second-hand market where you may discover a bargain! The old town retains its traditional charm and character and is full of lively tapas bars, restaurants, boutiques and craft shops.
On the hill above the house is the impressive San Miguel Moorish castle which houses it’s own museum in the caves below. Close by is the Parque de Majuelo botanical gardens containing one of Europe’s largest collection of subtropical plants. In the park are also the ruins of a fish salting factory founded by the Phoenicians in 400 BC. All year round there are local festivals and fiestas which can last for days and bring a carnival atmosphere to town. Another local attraction is the Loro bird park which has over 120 different species of birds on display. Visit the new aquarium - the largest in Andalucia!
Also, in the summer months Almunecar has an excellent water park set overlooking the sea in pretty gardens with great fun slides for the children and relaxing areas for adults to just sit and watch all the fun!
Almunecar is a traditional, unspoilt typically Spanish coastal town situated on the Costa Tropical famed for its mild climate which, according to the World Health Authority, is one of the healthiest climates in the world. The surrounding area is renowned for its fruit orchards and there is a large chirimoya (custard apple) plantation behind San Cristobal beach. The beaches are clean with good facilities bordered by long, palm-tree lined promenades, dotted with pretty restaurants and cherinquitos (beach bars) serving tasty local delicacies. The crystal clear sea makes the area ideal for diving with diving schools in Almunecar, La Herradura and Marina del Este. Most water sports are available during the summer months and life guards are on duty in high season.
Inland from Almunecar through the Alpujarra national park lies Granada (50 minute drive) and the beautiful Alhambra Palace.
Skiing is available in the winter months on the Sierra Nevada at one of the 39 ski runs at Pradollano ski village to the east of Granada (about a 90 minute drive), also tobogganing and ice-skating.
Further down the coast to the west is La Herradura (10 minute drive) which is a small bay offering plenty of water sports and the exclusive 500 berth marina at Marina del Este. Nerja is a pretty village further along the coast, popular with English tourists, and the spectacular caves of Nerja which contain the largest stalactite pillar in the world and newly discovered archaeological site certainly deserve a visit.
Some comments from recent guests:
'Beautiful holiday in Spanish surroundings
A really nice house in the middle of the old town with all the winding and steep streets. Everything worked fine and it was great to spend the first part of the evening on the roof before we went out to get a glass of red or white wine (including a free tapas, which always included) before the late dinner. Absolutely recommendable. And then there's much to all the wonderful towns and villages (Grenada with the Alhambra, Capileira etc..)'
'Wonderful town house Weve been in Almunecar 3 times before and this house is the very best we ever rented. - The location of the house in the old town makes it pretty difficult to find but on the phone we received precise friendly and very patient help on our way - all the way to the house.
We enjoyed every day here - especially the evenings on the terrace with a beautiful view of the city and the sea and with the outdoor kitchen not to mention the open air shower!
Well be back! '
