La Garrotxa

The grassy landscape of La Garrotxa boasts outstanding beauty, and features a remarkable volcanic area.

The region is made up of small municipalities, ancient villages and the historical towns of Santa Paul and Besalu.

Natural surroundings
La Garrotxa Natural Park is the scene of a volcanic site, one of the most important in Europe; with 30 craters, 40 volcanic cones and 20 lava flows. The park boasts outstanding natural
beauty.

The rest of the region is an area of outstanding natural beauty; lush green countryside, rugged mountains, and an abundance of flora and fauna species.

Towns and Villages of La Garrotxa
The capital of La Garrotxa is a town called Olot, a busy town with a rich architectural heritage. In the 14th century a powerful earthquake erupted destroying all of the buildings and monuments. Over centuries the town and its monuments was rebuilt. It’s now home to the region’s most important museum, the Garrotxa Regiona Museum, which represents the region through its arts, history and culture over the centuries.

Located just 35 minutes drive from Girona airport, and to the north of Banyoles, is the
striking town of Besalu. Besalu was an important town in Roman times; when the Moors were expelled from this corner of Spain in the ninth century it was one of the first independent counties that arose. Besalu is perfect for walkers,
cyclists and runners, with close to seemingly endless woodland, mountains and hillsides; the surrounding countryside is unspoilt and spectacular.

The stunning village of Santa Pau dates back to the 13th century, and is located in a mountainous,
natural region, which is extremely popular with rural tourists and ecologists.

Castelfollit de la Roca is a small town, one of the smallest in Catalonia, located close to the Fluvia and Toronell Rivers.

Cuisine
Succulent seafood, combined with the fresh produce, much of it organic, from the interior countryside; Girona’s cuisine is rich and quite distinct. Specifically delicious from the region are wild mushrooms, cheese, duck and goose, lobster, anchovies and prawns; with specialities including goose with pear and Gamba Roja de Palomos (Palomos red prawn).

Climate
The climate in La Garrotxa is a mix of mountain and Mediterranean climate. There is a lot of rain throughout the year, winter being the driest
season. The summers are cooler than down on the coast, and the winters are also much cooler!!
