Playa de las AmericasPlaya de las Americas is the largest tourist resort on the island of Tenerife, in the archipelago Canary Islands. The resort attracts the young and young at heart and is designed for visitors to have lots of fun in the sun.
Situated to the south of the island between the resorts of Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, Playa de las Americas has grown over the years and is now made up of three districts, the original Playa de las Americas, San Eugenio and Toviscas.
The resort enjoys a good infrastructure, decent beaches and incomparable nightlife, but if you are looking for cultural attractions, then you have to head out of Playa de las Americas and explore the rest of the island.
About townPlaya de las Americas has a bustling town centre, with an excellent selection of shops, bars, restaurants, pubs and clubs. Tourists looking for a home away from home won’t be disappointed as most supermarkets cater for foreign visitors and there is a good selection of international brands on shelves.
If you want to pick up a bargain present or souvenir then head to the Americas Torviscas Market, which takes place every Thursday and Saturday from 10am. The market is extensive and you can still haggle with the stall holders.
Getting around Playa de las Americas is easy, although set on a hill, which makes walking to some areas difficult, there is a mini train which takes you to most neighbourhoods, and there are also free buses that take visitors around the resort.
BeachesPlaya de las Americas is home to six beaches in total, three natural beaches and three man-made beaches; all have dark volcanic sand.
The main resort beach is linked with other beaches by a long promenade, which is backed by apartments and hotels.
Leisure ActivitiesThere are leisure activities for all ages in and around Playa de las Americas, including water parks, water sports of all kinds, boat excursions, golf, and horse and camel riding.
Of course a trip to Tenerife wouldn’t be the same without an excursion to the Mount Teide National Park, or to the main city of Santa Cruz, where you can soak up a more typical Canarian atmosphere.
Eating outPlaya de las Americas has restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. For those on a budget the resort has row upon row of fish and chip, pizza, and British grub restaurants. However, it also has an upmarket side, and you can also dine at top rated restaurants, where for a couple of hours you can get away from all the madness of the strip.
For further choice and a more laid-back environment head to dinner in the neighbouring resorts of Los Cristianos and Adeje.
NightlifeWhat can we say, but be ready to party; most visitors to Playa de las Americas come for a nocturnal holiday, all-night partying and club sessions. The area known as 'Veronica's Strip’ consists of row upon row of clubs and bars, most of which are open all night.
ClimateThe Canary Islands are nicknamed the Islands of Eternal Spring and temperatures rarely drop below 16ºC and rise to around 30ºC in the summer. Tenerife enjoys an all year round warm climate, which is influenced by the islands close proximity to North Africa.
