Formentera

The pretty and tranquil island of Formentera attracts visitors wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of life and get away from the crowds. Separated from Ibiza by a 4km channel (hourly boat services operate during the summer); step off the boat on the island and you are welcomed into a different world, where time pressure, stress and modern life are left far behind. The local people live at a gentle pace and there is always time to stop and chat, to help others and to smile.

The main residential area is the large village of San Francisco Javier; like the other Balearic Islands, Formentera has no shortage of pinewoods and sandy beaches and the pace of life is generally much more relaxed than the party island of Ibiza.

It is a place for those who adore truly heavenly beaches, with crystal-clear waters, where your only worry is that you might be dreaming.

Formentera does not have it's own airport, transfers are made to the island from Ibiza.

Leisure & recreation
Formentera is a great place for cycling and walking holidays, for relaxing on the beach or catching up with a good book or two. If you are looking for the perfect location for a romantic holiday for two, then Formentera is the place.

Although the island is quieter than the other Balearics, there is no shortage of good restaurants to enjoy the excellent fresh local produce.

Beaches
There are 18 glorious sandy beaches and four pebble beaches, meaning that wherever you are, there is always a beach nearby. The beaches are simple and peaceful; close to the main resorts they are well served by cheerful bars and restaurants, and there are many possibilities for water-sports.

Cuisine
The traditional cuisine of Formentera stems from the cultivation of the rich farmland, hunting and fishing that has taken place for many centuries.

Local dishes include: Guisat, a stew with potatos, flaó, a round cake made with eggs and soft cheese, grilled meats are also popular and there is a definite Catalonian twist to many dishes. You can also wash your dinner down with a glass of Frigola, a sweet local liqueur.

Climate
Formentera enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, with often very warm temperatures even in the depths of winter. The temperate nature of the climate and the fertile nature of the landscape mean that in the autumn, winter and spring you may encounter some rain, which is often heavy, but short lived. The summer months are long and lazy, with plenty of sunshine to enjoy.
